Jeremy Fu

I have loved the outdoors ever since I was a cub scout, making my own adventures in the woods at Camp Oljato. As a family we’d take road trips up and down the coast of California and inland towards Yosemite and Tahoe, packing our SUV to the brim be it with camping equipment or skis. 

I credit my parents for instilling in me an appreciation of nature and a desire to help others, traits which have influenced me to design products to help people and the planet. 

Being a Peer Adviser and mentoring 10 new engineering students every year has been one of the most rewarding experiences during my time at Northwestern. Now, as a masters student, I get the rewarding experience of being a TA for courses I took as an undergrad.

Maui Greens Inc · 2020 - 2021

  • Designed robotic watering system to vary volume, depth, and frequency of nutrient solution delivery for indoor vertical farming research
  • Led conversations with vendors for equipment sanitation and environmental plant growth chambers, investigated process integration
  • Utilized Gantt charts, weekly status reports, and design reviews to drive forward movement, self-accountability, and decision making

Bossa Nova Robotics · Summer 2019

  • Hardware and electronics design of scale for use in validation of robot’s weight, vertical center of gravity, and horizontal center of gravity for manufacturing quality checks
  • Designed and fabricated fixtures for to increase accuracy and precision of foam sealer placement in assembly of next-generation robots

  • Created websites for educational foundations, speakers, and local newspapers
  • Learned to talk to clients about their vision and needs, converting that into an aesthetic and functional website.

  • Gained insight into the intersection between business and technology looking at seed and middle market investments in tech as well as in real estate and retail

Stanford University, Dept. of Genetics · 2015 - 2016

  • Conducted independent research investigating effects of divergent microclimates on regulation of gene expression RNA editing in Drosophila
  • Developed experimental procedure utilizing CRISPR and Cas9 protocols to edit genes and create mutant flies that expressed various phenotypes
  • Paper accepted into Nature Communications: Regulation of gene expression and RNA editing in Drosophila adapting to divergent microclimates

NASA Ames, Human Factors Division · 2014 - 2015

  • Researched the human autonomic system through the development of AFTE, a physiological operant conditioning program, to improve astronaut performance on descent of the Orion Spacecraft
  • Created controlled testing environment for rotary chair test, entrance and exit surveys for study participants.
  • Worked on data analysis using DADiSP and Excel

  • Worked as a Junior Production Engineer
  • Responsible for production of precise 3D Motion Tracking Devices, including the final assembly and configuration, calibration and testing of systems
My Shrimp!

I have always found comfort in aquariums. There is something magical about being responsible for a miniature ecosystem — a world that cannot survive without my intervention. I see the delicacy and beauty of nature reflected in my tank. My aquarium captures memories of trips to the tide pools that dot the California coast, where I tried to trap native shrimp with my hands, moving slowly but deliberately through freezing water and hairgrass before surrounding them and admiring their coloration.

Plants! (and Planter Beds)

Quick weekend project while I was back home for winter break. I built 2 planter beds using 2×6 Redwood Planks, 3×3 Redwood posts and stainless steel deck screws to expand our family’s growing area.

My family didn’t have a powered saw for making cuts so I utilized the Home Depot Cutting Center to do all of my major cuts instead of cutting the planks by hand.
